Realising Inclusive and Safe Education

Funded by the Scottish Government, the Realising Inclusive and Safe Education (RISE) project will strengthen government support for children with disabilities—especially girls— in Malawi, Zambia, and Rwanda. It will ensure these children are able to access a safe and quality education. Project partners will support identification, assessment, and device provision for children with disabilities, will strengthen teacher and leadership training in gender and inclusive education, and will engage communities and school governance bodies to better support children with disabilities..

As part of a consortium led by Link Education International, STS and its affiliate School-to-School Zambia Limited (STSZ) will implement all RISE activities in Zambia. Key activities will focus on the Central Province and will include

  • Co-designing project interventions with local communities and stakeholders to ensure meeting the greatest local needs
  • Identifying and supporting learners through the provision of assistive devices and links to medical help and social services
  • Customizing materials and supporting local trainers to further teacher and school leader professional development at the primary and secondary levels
  • Facilitating inclusive education and community sensitization training for School Management Committees, parents, school leaders, and education authorities
  • Training for schools in creating evidence-based, participatory, and accessible improvement plans with a gender and disability lens
  • Consulting with Zambia’s Ministry of Education to ensure gender and inclusion are prominent agendas within national education standards
