Early Grade Education Activity in Jordan
The Early Grade Education Activity, “Asas,” is a five-year project funded by the U.S. Government to advance national efforts to strengthen the quality of pre- and in-service teacher education and improve Kindergarten through grade three (KG-G3) foundational and socio-emotional (SEL) skills across the Kingdom of Jordan. Collaborating closely with partners in the Government of Jordan, Asas seeks to strengthen the early grade education system by improving the quality of pre-service teacher education and in-service teacher professional development, enhancing early grade curriculum and teaching and learning materials (TLM), building community engagement, and supporting evidence-based systems and policies that promote system-wide alignment and maximize return on investment (ROI).
STS reviews, enhances, and ensures alignment of the Ministry of Education’s (MoE) system for assessing KG-G3 students and teachers, as well as building the MoE’s capacity to conduct high-quality assessments and make effective use of the results to strengthen teacher professional development and student learning. STS activities serve to strengthen the MoE’s capabilities to utilize diagnostic tools and assessments; integrate the project’s 5-Point Learning Framework; and support the project’s larger monitoring and evaluation efforts. Since Asa’s launch, STS has improved annual reading and math assessments using a lot-quality assurance sampling approach, supported the annual national assessments, and trained MoE officials on the data analysis and interpretation. STS is also developing a training package for the MoE’s learning assessment development and programming.
