Integrated Approaches to Education

Integrated models are widely used to address challenges in education and build necessary engagement from a variety of stakeholders for a supportive learning environment. All recognize that quality learning and teaching begins in early childhood, energizes classrooms, and empowers students. Some models have seen success in tackling inadequately trained teachers, low student attendance, poor learning performance, and gender inequity within schools. However, teaching alone is not enough. Children learn best when they are in well-organized and healthy school environments, supported by their families and communities.

In order for students to thrive, they must have their basic needs fulfilled. Through our holistic approach, STS addresses the barriers children face receiving a quality education, staying healthy, and thriving in a supportive environment.

Since 2002, STS has been refining its approach to education, called the Whole Child Model—a holistic set of interventions that seek to create the conditions of success for school children. In Guinea/Conakry (West Africa), STS has partnered with schools to support interactive learning, local language instruction, teacher and community training, and girls’ empowerment. We worked with local stakeholders to foster healthy learning environments through school health policies, provision of school medical supplies, construction of clean water access points and latrines. In addition, STS successfully promoted community engagement in education through community partnerships, effective school management training, parental involvement in education, and cross-cultural learning opportunities.

STS’s approach demonstrates that by providing a variety of types of support for teacher training, instructional materials, health, and community engagement, schools are revitalized, communities are energized, and children learn better.
