Around the world, children are struggling to access school, learn in school, and stay in school. One response to this pattern has been increased support for teachers, training, and instructional materials. While these are critical to helping students learn, equally important is children’s well-being—their health, mental outlook, and emotional security are foundational to learning.
Integrated approaches to education acknowledge the full spectrum of students’ wider needs and address challenges with a range of support. Some combine education and health, others focus on safe schools, parental support, income generation, or personal security. Since 2002, STS has been developing an approach called the Whole Child Model.
