Integrated Approaches to Education

Around the world, children are struggling to access school, learn in school, and stay in school. One response to this pattern has been increased support for teachers, training, and instructional materials. While these are critical to helping students learn, equally important is children’s well-being—their health, mental outlook, and emotional security are foundational to learning.

Integrated approaches to education acknowledge the full spectrum of students’ wider needs and address challenges with a range of support. Some combine education and health, others focus on safe schools, parental support, income generation, or personal security. Since 2002, STS has been developing an approach called the Whole Child Model.

In order for students to thrive, they must have their basic needs fulfilled. Through our holistic approach, STS addresses the barriers children face receiving a quality education, staying healthy, and thriving in a supportive environment.

The Whole Child Model combines best practices in education, health, and engagement to improve both the quality of instruction and the conditions of learning. In Guinea (West Africa) and in Tanzania, STS has supported active learning, local language instruction, equity in the classroom, and connections to children in other parts of the world. STS has helped schools promote health through hygiene policies, provision of first aid kits, construction of wells and latrines, and comprehensive health and nutrition education. And STS has helped parents and community members manage their schools, monitor school health conditions, and encourage their children, especially girls, to work hard in the classroom.

By integrating education, health, and engagement, STS has learned that schools are revitalized, communities are energized, and children learn better.
