Embracing Localization

Localization is more than just a buzzword; it is a philosophy that recognizes that those closest to the challenges are often best positioned to identify and implement effective solutions.

Enhancing Education Through Community Collaboration

Our role as outsiders in the communities we serve is to support and facilitate, rather than dictate. School-to-School International is striving to incorporate certain aspects of localization in our work in a few key ways. By following these principles, we believe that we can contribute to a brighter future in which communities are capable of sustaining work that truly reflects their needs and aspirations.

Building Trust with Local Organizations

As we begin to integrate localization into our work, we are working to enhance our collaboration with local organizations by moving beyond transactional relationships to building trust and mutual respect. To foster and nurture these meaningful relationships, we are adopting a transparent and inclusive approach to project design and implementation. By co-creating projects with local partners, we ensure our initiatives are culturally relevant and contextually appropriate. This collaborative approach not only increases the effectiveness of our interventions but also strengthens the capacity of local organizations.

Emphasizing Capacity Strengthening

Capacity strengthening plays a critical role in our localization strategy. When external support ends, development can only be sustained if robust local institutions are prepared to take the wheel and drive progress. Drawing from USAID’s guidelines, we are developing capacity-strengthening programs focused on enhancing the skills and capabilities of local educators, administrators, and policymakers that are tailored to meet the specific needs of each community.

Commitment to Collaboration and Adaptation

Our commitment to collaboration, learning, and adapting is also central to our approach. The contexts in which we work are dynamic and ever-changing. Therefore, we prioritize continuous learning and iterative improvement by involving local stakeholders in every step of monitoring and evaluation. Prioritizing this participatory approach ensures that our interventions are not only on track to meet objectives, but they are also able to provide valuable insights that inform future projects.

Commitment to Partnership and Shared Responsibility

One of the most significant challenges we encounter is the demand to balance donor requirements with local priorities. It is crucial that donors’ specific objectives and expectations correspond to communities’ wishes. By engaging local stakeholders in open dialogue around these potential tensions and helping strengthen their ability to identify and advocate for their needs, we strive to create projects that both local communities own and donors are able to fund.

We champion localization to ensure education programs are more relevant, effective, and sustainable.
