STS at CIES 2023

By STS | STS Blog | 0 comment | 14 February, 2023 | 8

Tomorrow kicks off the CIES 2023 Annual Meeting, which focuses on “Improving Education for a More Equitable World.” STS’s staff will join experts and colleagues for the conferences online and in-person components, adding ten presentations to the agenda’s rich schedule.

Our staff will be discussing a variety of topics as panelists, discussants, and chairs. Among CIES’s highlighted presentations include:

  • Screening children for disabilities: a review of tools, evidence, and implementation practices
Chaired by STS’s Deputy Director of Evaluation and Research Anne Laesecke, the panel offer evidence and insights into best practices for identifying learners with disabilities so that learning data can be collected and used in the policy-making that serves them. Anne will join long-time STS supporter and consultant Aimee Reeves to share lessons learned from a study conducted by School-to-School International under the All Children Reading: A Grand Challenge for Development. The study evaluates if results from the Child Functioning Module-Teacher Version (CFM-TV) assessment are adequate for reporting reading outcomes disaggregated by disability status at an aggregated level. Wed, February 15, 7:45 to 9:15am EST
  • Building teacher’s content and pedagogical knowledge in early mathematics
Given that donors and governments are increasingly funding early grade mathematics initiatives, there is a growing need to understand what teachers already know, where the gaps are, and how to fill these gaps. In this panel, STS’s staff members offer two presentations: “Measuring mathematical knowledge for teaching: Insights from a large-scale evaluation in a Sub-Saharan African country” and “Building teachers’ content and pedagogical knowledge through a problem solving-based professional development program: lessons learned from a Ghana program”. Presentations are delivered by Candace Debnam (Executive Director), Lauren McAskill (Sr. Director of Business Strategy), Fernanda Gándara (former Senior Technical Advisor, MEL) and Norma Evans (long-time friend and consultant to STS). Wed, February 22, 1:30 to 3:00pm EST

If you’re also attending, we’d love to connect with you in-person or online! Attend our sessions, engage us with your questions, or join us on social media @sts_intl.

Watch our blog as we share some of our highlights from the conference in the coming months.
