Building Teachers Pedagogical Content Knowledge and Mathematics Knowledge for Teaching

By STS | STS Blog | 0 comment | 25 April, 2019 | 7

Literacy and numeracy are both strong predictors of academic success. Instructional programs for both deserve a quality evidence base for their design, delivery, and monitoring in the primary and secondary grades. This post is the first in a two-part series.

For the past four years, STS was honored to be a partner in the USAID Partnership for Education: Learning Math Pilot, led by FHI360. Part of an integrated program supporting the Ghanaian Ministry of Education and Education Service, the project sought to improve reading and math instruction in the early grades. Through the program, we worked with local partners to revise early grade mathematics syllabuses, create accompanying training guides, and lead teacher professional development.

Our work was recently featured in Towards the Design and Implementation of Comprehensive Primary Grade Literacy and Numeracy Programs, a working paper by the Global Reading Network. Below is the first of two case studies about our contributions.

To learn more about the ways USAID is designing, implementing, and overseeing early grades literacy and numeracy program development and implementation, read the full paper.
