The USAID Partnership for Education: Learning (Learning) Math Pilot, led by FHI360, was part of an integrated program supporting the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ghanaian Education Service (GES) to improve reading and math instruction in the early grades.
Based on blueprint established by the MOE/GES, STS led the Math Pilot to operationalize a revised, evidence-based primary mathematics syllabus, instructional materials, and school-based in-service support model. STS pre-piloted the model in 20 schools across two districts during the first school year, before using the lessons learned to inform an expanded, full pilot implementation in 60 new schools, accompanied by a rigorous external impact evaluation of the model. The effects of these supports were the preparation of teachers with increased knowledge of mathematics, improved attitudes and beliefs about teaching and learning, and increased access to and use of suitable instructional materials. The results of the pilot served as a basis for the government of Ghana to decide whether it will adopt the revised model as part of its national curriculum.
