March Newsletter

March 2014

Friends of STS,

The last two months have been very busy for STS. Since January, we’ve had team members in Guinea, India, Tajikistan and Pakistan working on projects ranging from teacher trainings to early grade reading assessments to school-based health and nutrition workshops.

Thanks to your generous support, STS continues to improve learning standards and outcomes worldwide. To further support our work, please visit our website or our GlobalGiving page by clicking here.

Thank you,
The STS Team

Special Delivery in Guinea

This past January, STS team member Claire Wasserman travelled from California to Guinea to make a special mail delivery to 167 students — pen pal letters from students in the U.S. and Canada. In the first exchange of letters, foreign students were matched with sister schools in Guinea. After reading the letters, Guinean students replied to their new friends overseas, sharing details about their families and schools and drawing self-portraits and pictures of their pets and families. These letters have since been distributed to 167 students at American and Canadian schools. Students will exchange another round of letters in March.

During this trip, STS also distributed scholarships to 30 girls in our 10 experimental schools and conducted school management workshops and teacher trainings. STS brought together 22 school directors and 22 members of school management committees to share lessons learned from our school health and nutrition interventions funded by the Alcoa Foundation. We also trained dozens of teachers how to use activity-based learning modules and providing coaching in literacy and numeracy.
